We left Santa Cruz a little later than we thought – that’s what happens when you spend a night at a winery with good wine and company. You can read about that here.
Day 2
We headed South towards Molina, Chile, the town nearest Siete Tazas National Park. The drive is going down Ruta 4. Sieta Tazas was a bit out of the way of Ruta 4 – but we knew it would be worth it. Once we drove past the town of Molina, the road became gravel – whhhaaat? We were not expecting gravel road so soon on this road trip. Steve was still getting use to the van, and took the road slow, we were being passed up regularly by locals. We reached the Siete Tazas National Park around 2PM and took advantage of some viewing platforms and some small hikes. Siete Tazas National Park is named for its “7 Cups”.
During our time here, we visited the El Velo de Novia Falls (bridal veil), the Siete Tazas and the Salto de la Leona Falls. The cost to get in was 10,000 Pesos total. We only stayed for a few hours, but really enjoyed it here. We debated about finding a nearby camping spot, but thought it was best to get back on the road and trek further along. Our drive back to the highway included traffic caused by 100’s of sheep & goats!
We ended up making it a few hours more South and found a beautiful spot by a river to stay the night. The entire time I was thinking of Chris Farley’s famous SNL skit – I live in a van down by the river! We enjoyed some Chilean wine, and pasta (hey – we have limited options) and watched the sunset. In the river, we saw river otters, but they were not close enough for a photo – they must be shy. Our spot was near the highway, but not close enough to be annoyed with traffic constantly. We had “neighbors” down the river a bit, and we could hear them fishing for their dinner while we ate ours. Overall, it was a beautiful spot, and conveniently located a short drive from the highway.
Stay Tuned for more adventures!
