Patagonia Run – Los Alerces National Park, Argentina – Day 7

We spent an amazing Christmas in Villa La Angostura, but it was time to move on.  You can read about it here.

Day 7

We left Villa La Angostura and headed towards the larger city San Carlos de Bariloche, on the other side of the lake.  We decided to drive around the town and towards the area of Llao Llao.  Llao Llao is a beautiful area of the city, with a scenic loop drive.  Here we had outstanding views of the National Park.  We kept our eyes open for Andean Condors – the largest bird in the world.  We were told by guides that they are rare to spot, travels in pairs (they mate for life), and their wingspan can be up to 10 feet wide.  We had no luck spotting any.

We spent most of the morning and early afternoon exploring the area, but soon hit the road to head South.  We drove a few hours to Los Alerces National Park and had our first glimpse at an Argentinean glacier.  The National Park cost 150 pesos each but offered free camping in the park.  As we drove through the park, we kept our eyes open for wild life, but no luck.  We found a free campsite right along the lake.  We walked around the lake, started a fire, and cooked dinner – pasta!  The mosquitos were being a bit of a nightmare, so we called it an early night and retreated to our van.

The next morning, we checked out one of the waterfalls.  The hike to the falls was minimal, but worth the time.  We wanted to do a few more hikes in the area, but the construction in the park caused the closure of a few trails.  So it was time to hit the road again – heading South!

If not adventuring with loved ones, I am usually running half marathons, reading books, trying new food, cuddling with Sparky, Brady or Tachy, hiking, playing ice hockey, or rooting for a local bay area sports team. “...when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.” ― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
